Driving Test Preperation

All
Consistent safe driving habits, thorough preparation, and a solid understanding of Queensland road rules are essential to successfully passing the Q-SAFE assessment.

Understanding the Test Structure: The Q-SAFE test lasts approximately 30 minutes and is competency-based, meaning there is no fixed percentage score. It is divided into three sections: pre-drive checks (covering vehicle controls and roadworthiness), low-speed manoeuvres (such as U-turns, hill starts, and reverse parking), and traffic driving (including intersections, roundabouts, lane changes, speed management, and hazard response).

Preparation: Practising under supervision and with qualified driving instructors is highly recommended. Supervised driving builds valuable experience, while professional instructors can provide targeted advice on manoeuvres, observation techniques, and familiarisation with potential test routes.

Key Skills and Safety Practices:
- Observation and head checks: Always turn your head and check mirrors clearly before lane changes or merges.
- Speed control: Maintain a safe, legal speed, preferably a few km/h below the limit, and adjust for school zones or residential areas.
- Manoeuvres: Practise hill starts, reverse parallel parking, three-point turns, U-turns, and kerbside stops until proficient.
- Roundabouts and intersections: Follow correct give-way rules, signal appropriately, and maintain proper lane positioning.
- Smooth control: Brake, accelerate, and steer with steady, confident inputs.

Test-Day Preparation: Arrive early, complete your pre-drive checks, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, and bring all required documentation. Stay calm, focused, and follow examiner instructions precisely. Avoid distractions such as mobile phones and observe all traffic laws.

Choosing a Test Centre: Selecting a familiar test location can boost confidence. As centres vary in difficulty, choose one with traffic patterns, layouts, and routes you know well.
